Marketing

I added a dozen new items to my Etsy shop yesterday. Well, some Saturday night, some yesterday. I have been very busy! And finally I'm selling some stuff! I also woke up to find I'm in another treasury! http://www.etsy.com/treasury_list.php?room_id=49178

I have to say that I have been working my butt off. Marketing is a lot of work, and I probably don't work smarter, but work harder on it. Need to change that. Making notes to self, work smarter, Robyn, not harder. I had a talk about marketing with my boss the other day. I brought up the Twilight movie. After seeing it, I really didn't get what all the hype was about. It's all about marketing. There's a lot of things out there that are not so great... but do so well because they have amazing marketing. Just my opinion here, but a few of those not-so-great things are: Twilight, Hannah Montana, McDonald's.

And since I think I have the most excellent, most amazing products, I need to start thinking like the people marketing Twilight. I've paid for advertisements, I've listed on various websites. Now to fine tune what I'm doing.

I'm in a local craft show next week, and I sometimes show my items at work. I've advertised the craft show. Sometimes I'm a little too shy for local promotion, but I'm getting there. Ok, I'm not shy. It's just difficult to sell my self. I was taught to not be cocky.

I will check into the Saturday Market. Just not sure I'm ready for that yet. Oh, I'll be adding a product of the week to my blog soon. With a paypal button where you can purchase directly from here!

What have you tried? Has anything helped you to work smarter and not harder? What has been a failure?

Congrats on being in another treasury!

I've been trying to figure out how to market smarter too. I've been reading Etsy Marketing for some ideas. But it's not possible to implement them all as fast as they put out ideas!

Congratulations on the sales! That's simply wonderful :)

Hmm, marketing. Get a mailing list. I don't know if you have one or not, but definitely get one.

Don't know if you've read Alyson Stanfields "I'd Rather Be In The Studio!" but I'd suggest it. She gives excellent advice!

If you ever have any questions, just shoot 'em my way!

Hi Robyn, great post. Congrats on Treasury! That's always nice exposure.
Marketing? I read your post- and it's like I've been reading about myself..
Good luck to you!

I am with you on this! In addition to what you said, I find myself getting caught up in internet promotion sometimes when I should be spending my time more wisely.

Congrats on the sales AND the treasury. For a couple of weeks I was on a roll with being profiled in blogs but no actual sales came of it. I did a craftcult ad for a week and got more traffic but no sales. I'm terrible at local promotion and have no friends/relatives who pass out my cards, etc. Honestly, I'm lost all over again and would love some advice. :)

I'm currently working on marketing smarter too! Wow - great minds think alike :P

The item of the week idea definitely works! I've sold two custom orders through it so far :)

Robyn - I love your blog & your writing style. Of course I knew immediately that you are a talented writer as well as an artist!

My internet marketing is almost non-existent. For LOCAL marketing, I simply mention my candles EVERYWHERE I GO! I drop it into conversations with others as well as with my son, Max. And I do mean everywhere.

In the supermarket - "Honey, we'll make cookies after Mommy makes some candles". In Michaels... "Do you think Mommy should make candles in these watering cans?". And especially in the Post Office... "We have to mail Mommy's candles right now because the lady is waiting for them". The person standing near me in line invariably says "Excuse me.. Did you say you MAKE candles?"

And I ask other's opinions all of the time - "Excuse me, may I ask you a question. I make hand-poured soy candles. How much would you pay for a candle in this china teacup if you were at a craft fair?"

Yes, it is shameless. BUT IT WORKS! This is how I get at least 1/2 of my local sales! Hope this gives someone some useful ideas.
